Mokai Hut was originally built in approx 1958 by the NZ Forest Service for a home base to accommodate deer culler's working in the area. In 2015 the hut was moved and upgraded by a team of ex deer culler's, landowner Joe Corpe and friends to enjoy for years to come. The hut sleeps four in comfortable bunks and contains an open fire for cooking and heating. A farm track makes access by 4WD possible for most of the year otherwise it's accessible by ATV all year round. Being so accessible means we can cater for shorter stays although we do recommend a two night minimum to truly appreciate the area and it's surrounds. Hut accommodation is included in the daily rate of your hunting trip.
Miracle Hut (Joe's Hut)
The original Miracle Tent Camp was erected to accommodate deer culler's working higher on the range for use as early as the 1940's. The tent camp eventually fell apart, but Joe Corpe, (owner of Mokai Station who sadly passed away in 2016), built 'Joe's Hut' near the old tent camp site along with his wife and friends for hunting pursuits and to use on their high country cattle musters. The hut sleeps three people comfortably. It has a heli-pad, meat safe and amazing views. Stay in the roar and there's a high chance you will hear the stags roaring outside. Miracle Hut is not accessible by 4WD or ATV but that adds to the appeal of this location. Walk and hunt your way across the tops with your guide and appreciate the silence of your back country surroundings when you arrive at the hut for a well earned 'brew'. This hut may also be accessed by helicopter. Contact us for more information on this option. Hut accommodation is included in the daily rate of your hunting trip.
Mokai Shearer's Quarters
If a back country hut stay is not what your after, a stay at the refurbished Mokai Shearer's Quarters may be more to your liking. It's also an option for anyone that may be traveling with you that's not so keen on staying in a back country style hut, and wishes to be a little closer to the road end. Taihape township is around 30 minute's drive and has cafes, two supermarkets and shopping. The quarters sleep up to 8 people and boasts a spa, a deck with a view and the peace and quiet of country living. This accommodation is also available as a farm stay option separate to the Mokai Red Deer Hunting operation. Please contact us for further details.
